ManyFest photo essay

- by admin

today after doing a photoshoot with @djdanthrax who is one of my favourite people ever he took off on his amazing new bike we wandered up the street to the weekend-long party known as ManyFest

which is a silly name I know but last year was Lights on Broadway and you can't really top that. plus this year was a mishmash of tons more stuff so the name kinda works.

as the name suggests we saw many things

like motorized hipster bikes

and classic car-b-ques

fresh local veggies

and giant chess

outdoor Zumba classes

and a Soap Box Derby which I'll blog about tomorrow

Tyrone looked cute

and took pictures of me with chess

and sweetheart that he is, he's making me dinner to boot.

working on a big post but it's not ready yet

- by admin

I don't know how to end it.

so instead you get to read about how we went and hung out in the North End today which was nice because it was 32 degrees, sunny, slightly windy and I wasn't hungover from the at-home wine party Tyrone and I threw ourselves last night because it's been a rough week and it was friday so why not?

we shot a bunch of vid of the neighbourhood around Mountain and McGregor which is where my Grandma's old house is. she lived there from the time she was two to when she was 77 can you believe that? if you aren't from Winnipeg let me tell you that parts of the North End ain't what they used to be, and even though someone was shot in a gang fight two nights after my Grandma moved out I didn't get scarytime vibes walking around today. at least in the St John's (park, school, street, etc) part of the North End it seemed really nice and I felt 100% safe.

and yes I know I shouldn't write off an entire neighbourhood based on the fact that it's got a bad reputation and I'm not trying to. in a roundabout way I'm trying to say that not every part of the North End of Winnipeg is somewhere to avoid. everywhere's got bad neighbourhoods and if you go a few streets over in my neighbourhood (West Broadway) there's some sketchy ish that goes down.

like last night when we saw a dude get arrested!

Tyrone was out having a smoke outside and he ran upstairs and was all "omg they're arresting someone RIGHT NOW!" so we peeped over the sills of our front window and sure enough two cop cars were arresting some dude who, according to Tyrone who saw it happen (someone else was already calling the cops) was all wasted and trashing the porch of the house across the street. so of course we rubbernecked hard and watched it go down and I've never seen anyone get arrested before and it was weirdly interesting? I'm not sure why, maybe it was the wine.

so today while we were walking around shooting video these kids (seriously, like ten years old or younger) were walking past us and one kid as like "hey you wanna buy some kush?" and later at Machray Park we saw him working out a deal with some chick who was maybe twelve. it was ridiculous she was standing by the fence on the corner and he was on the swings yelling his prices to her. ridiculous!

anyway it's time for perogies and some Alfred Hitchcock Presents before we go out to ManyFest in a bit.

so busy.

YouTube isn't working for me

- by admin

I was going to post a vlog I did about being a part of the RRC CreComm Bloggers Round Table this morning with Erica, Liz, and James that was beyond fantastic.

I was going to thank Kent Larsen for having us and thank the CreComm students for not making fun of me when I said stupid things
and I even re-recorded the video so I didn't burp in the middle of it
but YouTube refuses to let me upload the video with audio that syncs up to their site with audio that syncs up and the result is just too painful and creepy to watch so I'm just going to say this:

thank you Kent, thank you CreComm students, and thank you wonderful Winnipeg bloggers (so nice meeting you in person!)

and since I can't show you my video here's a video of Louis CK talking about George Carlin:

life lessons from the back end of Union Station

we are going to this tonight and I am pumped.

@cenquist and @dpontecelli are picking us up in a bit and I am mildly stressed about what I am going to wear because this day happens to be the only cold, rainy garbage day we've had basically all summer. it's a dressed-up event so I can't slum around in jeans (as if I do that anyway, c'mon) but all my skirts are flowy and gorgeous and with this wind combined with the river the whole boat will see my underwear every time I step onto the deck which I will have to do a lot since Ty and Jabez smoke. so that's out.

last night the group of us sat out on the deck and drank wine and smoked cigars and I felt like a grown-up for once.

because Cenquist is house-sitting he and Daniella had the masted bedroom and Tyrone and I slept in a little girls room and when I say 'little girls room' I mean like it was nearly 100% pink, had Disney princesses everywhere, big flower bedspread, the works. like the room every girl wanted but never got. oh and it had a double (maybe queen?) sized bed, which blew my mind because I had a lame twin bed when I was growing up and acquiring a double bed when I moved out and having room for two people was a bit deal for me. anyway. I felt very scandalous sleeping next to Tyrone in a bed where a little girl sleeps and I am realizing as I type this that it might genuinely be creepy? is it? we slept far apart, I swear!

anyway

I played MegaMan X today and holy Hell that game is annoying. amazing, but so annoying in a throw your controller across the room in frustration when you get all the way to the end of the level and the stupid penguin boss kills you and you have to start all over again at the beginning of the level are you serious? this is how you know the game is for children because only kids have that kind of time to invest.

we eventually moved onto two-player games and have been obsessively playing Tetris Battle for the last half an hour and I keep losing and getting stressed but can't stop playing? at least I'm better at this than Dr Mario.

eventually I'm going to have to stop playing games and get ready to go out. should I wash my hair or keep it up?

big questions, on the weekend.

Tried to go see a play Friday night

we didn't make it

was too busy hanging with these kids and Ty

and eating this

and smoking cigars with Rhondal

at first I felt like this

but we saw a cat on a leash wearing a Bombers jersey

and we went to Lo Pub to say goodbye to mrghosty which I wrote about here.

Kickass show tonight

Enjoy Your Pumas is opening tonight along with other locals Mise En Scene

I'm mildly obsessed with the Pumas, so check out the vid and lemme know your reaction

(also the vid's shot all around #Winnipeg -that castle the guy rolls out of is on the U of W campus -I took an exam in there once!)

they're also opening for one of my fav bands Library Voices who I adore

mega stoked for this show

and also how free it is (thanks UMFM!)

we're meeting up with @jabezlee and his lovely lady and booking 'er over

and now I've realized

we're going to be late

The world-famous Winnipeg Fringe Festival starts today

- by admin

and though I can't go until Friday

since I'm seeing my Grandma (who doesn't like plays) tonight, and seeing Library Voices tomorrow at the West End Cultural Centre (for free! Thanks @UMFM!)

I scored a set of free tickets from @KingsTransfer and am looking forward to heading out with Ty, @Cenquist and possibly some others to partake in the theater.

For you out-of-towners, the @WinnipegFringe is a huge deal here in #Winnipeg and we get some of the very best, most talented people to come and visit us for a while and perform their musicals, shows and plays.

Ty and I went last year and were harassed by the surliest clown ever and saw a bunch of plays that don't seem to be coming back this year (shame, 'Cactus the Seduction was amazing) and since unfortunately I'm not (yet) SuperWoman which means I can't attend every play I want to see, here are my top four picks:

Bedlam

The Brain from Planet X

Cannibal! The Musical

Hedwig and The Angry Inch

Clearly these are subject to change depending on what times are available, and who happens to be standing around outside promoting their play and are nice to me

(hint: buying me a beer helps in the decision-making ;))

Hip Hop Sunday #7 Kanye West - Welcome to Heartbreak ft Kid Kudi

- by admin

This is hands-down one of my favourite Kanye vids

love the track, but especially the compression hack fade effect

(and that awful sweater!)

now get the f outside! In #Winnipeg it's going to be over 35 degrees today and Ty and I are heading to Assiniboine Park to take some shots with Hansel and play in the sun

happy Hip Hop Sunday!

Know what I don't care about?

- by admin

That Winnipeg will be getting a new NHL team.

I've been bombarded with new reports, FaceBook updates and tweets from various #Winnipeg peeps about the economic benefits, the social benefits, the local pride, etc.

And you know what? I still don't give a shit.

I've been called a "bad Winnipegger" and "not a real Canadian" by some people in the Twitterverse after voicing my displeasure over having to constantly read and re-read about how zomg there's going to be a 'riot' at Portage and Main when the announcement is made. Or wait, isn't it supposed to be The Forks? Typical Winnipeg, nobody can coordinate properly (I kid).

(photo swiped from @dasme's Twitter feed)

I'm actually sitting here and listening to coworkers talk about getting "cheap season tickets at 400$ a pop", which might not seem like a lot (yes it does) but apparently you have to sign a commitment to agree to buy season tickets for three years? Is that true? Ouch!

I guess they aren't as hardcore as these peeps, though:(I'm not sure what the original source of this photo is, it's being retweeted all over the place -I got mine from @kentonlarsen)

And also, guys, we aren't "getting the Jets back". It's a totally different team -The Jets were sold to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes, and the team we're apparently getting is the Atlanta Thrashers. And I don't know if I fully buy that "getting the Jets back" is acquiring another team and then switching the name back.

I think one commenter in the Winnipeg Free Press put it pretty well:

MAY 31, 2011 AT 10:05 AM
" subject to NHL board of governors' approval "
I will gladly eat some humble pie, when its approved by everyone that needs to approve it. Until then, SHUTUUPPPPPP!! YOU JET FANS ARE SOO ANNOYING!! I really hope they don't call them the jets again, give it up! at least get a new name! Do all of you who have pets, keep re naming your new dog your dead dogs name.....

Hey, they said it, not me.

But if we Winnipeggers are going to insist on keeping the same name, can we at least get a better theme song?

It's 2011, surely we can do better than that.

But hey, don't let my being a Negative Nancy rain on your parade. Just because I'm not changing my Twitter icon to a Jets logo or donning my dad's old Jets jersey and wearing it around the office with pride (he didn't have one, he's just as apathetic about this as I am -nor would I do that) doesn't mean I won't go to the occasional game and get stupid drunk and yell obscenities at the other team.

You'll just have to buy my ticket for me.
