We can use all the help we can

Got treated to a delish din at Buccacino's by Victoria last night.

It's the last time I'm going to see her till Xmas, she leaves for Ottawa tomorrow.

I keep feeling in-between being sociable and lazy today and it's so rare that I have a whole day to myself that even putting on some makeup and going in this blistering heat seems unfathomable.

I already watched Brazil and really enjoyed it, I'd forgotten about stories like those in 1984 and Farenheit 451 etc but this was a nice reminder of social commentary and satire as well as 80's cult filmmaking.

Oh, and notice the parallel between when John comes out of the torture room and nonchalantly removes his blood-splattered lab coat while chatting with Sam, and the Matthew Good Band video for Carmelina? Cool.

Watch it if you haven't already.

So what's next? I have some movies kicking around and some games I could be playing and eventually dinner and then what?

Oh right, coffee and a walk with Candice.

That's being productive, right?

Happy Labor Day guys!

If I ever go broke from bad investments and lose all my marbles I hope I can do it as well as Emperor Norton.

A businessman in San Fran he lost the money bequested to him by his father and disappeared for a while and came back cooler and I guess crazier than ever.

Who has the balls to name themselves the Emperor of the United States (and Protector of Mexico), after all?

Hanging out on the streets in high regalia with walking canes or umbrellas, Norton I personally inspected cable cars and signs, sidewalks and the uniforms of police officers and was, I bet, everyone's best friend.

Those were the days when crazies were cool, eccentrics were humored and when some asshole cop with a wicked name (Armand Barbier) tried to put 'em in a mental hospital the people were outraged.

How dare you try and put the Emperor away!

Luckily for Armand the Emperor was big enough to grant him an Imperial Pardon
and from then on all the police officers saluted Norton when they passed him on the street.

The subject of characters and plays and popular media the Emperor died suddenly on a corner one day.

Just like that.

He had no money but the people loved him so much that the people of the Pacific Club shelled out for an expensive redwood coffin and over 30,000 people showed up to mourn everyones' favorite monarch.

He wrote to Queen V. asking to marry her, did you hear?
She'll probably never get over the loss.

They finally built that bridge he was always harassing everyone about and while they didn't name it in his honor as was proposed, Emperor Norton Day is January 8th so make sure that if you can't be at the grave-site that says

"Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico"

take a second to bow yr head and remember that it's people like The Emperor who make life worth living.

Even if he died 130yrs before you were born.

I like movie theatres with no-one in them

I wish I had a waterproof camera so I could share with you guys how amazing yesterday was, but unfortunately you'll have to settle for my meager words:

Yesterdays BTA Tubing Adventure was the best idea ever.

I've never gone tubing before and at Brokenhead River you can rent huge tubes with mesh in the middle for holding beers and sitting as well as cup holders for 10$ a pop and spend an hour and a half floating down a river being stupid with your friends and drinking in the heat and sunshine.

It was so good that we went twice.

Morely and I tied our tubes together because mine was to puffy I couldn't reach over the sides with my little girl arms to properly paddle away from embankments and branches hanging over the water and I was pretty thankful because it turns out just floating and not worrying about that stuff makes it all the more enjoyable.

It was perfect; the weather, the people, the activity.

I don't think I'd been that happy and content in a really long time, I wish I could go back and do it again.

Nothing ever really touches me

You know your grandma really loves you when you go to her place for her birthday and she insists on sending you home with a care package consisting of stuff from M&M Meats and the leftover home-made sauce and meatballs with spaghetti she made you for dinner.

Grandma S. is 87 today.

My sassy gram was born in 1922 in the same house she lived in until her 70's when the once prominent German neighborhood got too rough, so we moved her into a cute apartment downtown near where I live.

'Cause she can beat yr ass with words, but she's a lady and ladies don't mingle with hoodlums.

My darling gram lived an idyllic childhood that consisted of wholesome activities like skating at the rink on Redwood and Main in the winter to ballroom music and seeing two movies, a short, and a cartoon with a box of popcorn for a nickel at the Starland Cinema.

When she was in her 20's she moved to Thunder Bay with a girlfriend and worked in a factory making shell casings for bombs during WWII until the war was over and she came back here and met my Grandpa who swept her off her feet with his smooth-talk and good looks and had two babies, one of which is my dad.

She's lived through times of enormous change and even though she still uses words like "Negro" and "Fags" she doesn't mean to offend, no. She's just a product of a bygone age when women never left the house without heels and a skirt or at the very least pressed slacks and when you could leave your doors unlocked at night.

She'll never read this because she can't use a computer, doesn't want to. She's smart as hell but in a well-read, worldly way and if you have a question you can bet your bottom dollar she'll give you the best advice you can find and give you a Revello and a hug afterward.

Grandma S. would give the world to see you smile.

And she means the world to me.

Happy birthday Grandma, I love you so much.

Did I ever tell you that Osborne Village at night is one of my favorite places?

How much I love walking out my front door on to it?

That after having a really frustrating evening that going for a walk under the florescents with Candice and getting lost for two hours and finally finding our way back put me in such a stellar mood, heightened by the fact that I was going to my home that I love in a neighborhood that I love?

Because even though now I won't be asleep until after 2am and will be exhausted tomorrow,

I'll fall asleep with a smile on my face.
