Winnipeg is the best place to be from
- by admin
which is something you don't hear often
not even from people from winnipeg
but it's true.
we're a big city still trying to be a small town
stuck being a small town with big-city problems
with shitty weather half the year
and a seething inferiority complex
in the middle of nowhere
(literally)
and we spend more time slamming
our sketchy mayor
our shitty transit system
and our winters
than saying good things about anything.
but our little frozen hovel
stuck out in the prairie
like a defiant 'fuck you' to common sense
breeds
amazing artists, writers, and most of all musicians
and a complex, intricate love/hate relationship
with the place we call 'home'.
this town makes you nicer
you smile and say 'hello' and make small talk in line at tim horton's
help out your neighbours or that guy
whose car got snowed in up the block
not because you want someone to reward you for doing it
but because it's the nice thing to do, dammit.
being stuck in the middle of the country
makes us much more appreciative
of what other cities have
oh you have efficient mass transit?
oh your skyline has buildings in it?
and up until a few weeks ago
oh you have an IKEA?
its size makes us all connected
everyone's had too much to drink at the king's head
gone to osborne village on canada day
seen a show at the west end
had a greasy burger at blondie's
been harassed the twoonie lady downtown
and we've all suffered from
missing a bus that came thirty seconds too early
or getting stuck outside waiting for a bus that came twenty minutes late
trying to strike a balance between two options
which are never in your favour.
living here makes you hard
we're sarcastic and cynical and critical
of everything
especially ourselves
and especially our hometown
which is why when someone else makes fun of it
they can fuck off
because that's our job
and unless you've spent your life
shovelling snow and dealing with overnight parking bans
hanging out at the toad people-watching on the weekends
driving to grand beach during the summer
and
complaining about all the things you could do if only
you were somewhere else
you haven't earned the right to bash winnipeg.
because you don't love it like we do
especially not as as much as when we say
"I fucking hate this town".
We came, we saw, we ate bacon
- by admin
baconfest winnipeg is in its second year but this was my first time going and it was worth it to eat stuff like what's pictured above, which is bannock (I think)
@cenquist was there with his sad/scary movember 'stache taking notes about everything we ate which I forgot to do because I was too busy eating, duh.
there were bacon cookies and bacon cakes and bacon hot dogs with bacon sprinkles and bacon cinnamon buns and bacon pitas and bacon ravioli with lobster and bacon ice cream and omg
Tyrone was looking extra-sharp in his fab new bowtie and stunning 'stache
there were my little ponies
whose bacony insides we devoured with bread and pickles and peppers, oh my
and which @kenquist used to stir his bacon-espresso-coffee creation which tasted good but got weird towards the end
and pose-offs in-between beers and bacon-infused drinks, of course
before rolling our poly selves home to lie around in a bacon-infused stupor for a few hours, as evidenced by Tyrone's lazy eye.
big thanks to @elishadacey for the ticket hook-up!

Nuit Blanche Wpg 2012 edition
- by admin
night out on the town with two of my favourite boys. got dolled up and hung out at the WAG people-watching, chatting and catching up. wandered around and saw some neat installations. tyrone says he's got tons of ideas for MEME 2013 which is exciting. left my mark on the wall in one of the rooms because why not?
saw lots of familiar faces. walked around tons. wound up at an AV show in the exchange somewhere. I thought we were lost. we weren't. mulligan was there so I know it was cool. got greasy pizza for the walk home. didn't eat it because I was too tired. slept in. so good.
today is wonderful. had a great cup of coffee. leaves are falling and it smells like autumn. watched this music video and I love it. great start to the week.
got lost on the bus today
- by admin
okay well not really.I had an appt this morn which meant I couldn't take the usual 180 express bus I usually take to work if I'm not biking because I learned today it only runs during peak traffic hours.
which would have been okay but only 1 other bus goes to where I work and that was three very confusing bus rides/transfers away.
which basically left yr grl stranded at the corner of pembina & bishop grandin because the 51 I needed to catch to go catch my 78 was early and I couldn't run across the highway & through traffic fast enough.
now I'm at work and I have to stay late and my legs hurt and I'm tired & cranky but none of that really matters anymore because I have a coffee and a slice of leftover pizza and this video of Rickyisms from one of my fav shows.
so I'm gonna make like a tree and fuck off.
RIP The Lo Pub
- by admin
yesterday I went out with tyrone, @abstractartform and @cenquist for some beers and snacks at my favourite close-to-school haunt, the lo pub, which is closing this weekend and it's breaking my heart.
I don't 100% understand what's happened beyond the fact that the HI hostel that was in the same building is moving and the building was up for sale and, I guess, the new owners didn't want to keep the lo pub part of it.
what I do know and understand is that it sucks, 100%.
besides the fact that lo is right beside my campus and was the perfect place to head in-between (or before, or after) class to grab some half pints and something from their seriously delicious vegetarian menu (omg the chickpea fritters omg) and hang with friends, to the monthly meetups for secret handshake, it was a super-important venue for the local music scene.
I've seriously seen every kind of band there, shitty rock and low-key indie and weepy chicks singing and the 8-bit shows my pal mr ghosty (pictured) did there, too. I'm not a musician (ha) but my peeps tell me jack was the nicest and coolest guy to deal with, and he gave a legitimate shit about the music scene here.
he's one of those guys who might not know you (though he might know me from how often I sucked back beers there) but everyone knows who he is. I'm sure there are lots of people who owe their first shows to him, and lots more who owe their awesome evenings to him.
RIP lo pub. here's hoping the crew can make the magic happen somewhere else real soon.
Happy 2nd Birthday Secret Handshake!
- by admin
my favourite monthly meetup of awesome Winnipeg types turned two last night and we were out in full force to celebrate at The King's Headthere were tons of name tags and raffle presents and snacks (not pictured)
and the lovely Leanne made a lovely speech and we all heckled her
and I got dragged onstage to help her pick some raffle winners, of which I wasn't one but congrats to the fine tweeps who walked away with some awesome Parlour Coffee swhwag (I'm so jealous)
of course the obligatory Secret Handshake Ladies' Trifecta of Awesome bathroom shot featuring myself, Leanne and the short-n-lovely Stef
though when Leanne brought out some tube socks from her purse I knew things were getting weird and it was time to get some Smoke's Poutine and go home
Hip Hop Sunday # 33 - Sons of Science - Motherf*cking Bike
- by admin
cred goes to Tony for posting this a few weeks ago, though it's just as good today as when I first saw it on his blog and it's applicable because with weather looking like this:
BOOM!
I'm going to be out & about on my motherfucking bike. you'd have to be a fool to stay inside on a day like this.
enjoy your Sunday kids!
